MARBEL participates to the COLLABAT Cluster EV-battery solutions showcase

On 26 November 2024, the UPC School of Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB) in Barcelona hosted the COLLABAT Next-Gen EV-Battery Solutions Showcase. This event brought together five European projects focused on advancing electric vehicle (EV) battery technology to address key challenges in the transition to sustainable transportation. Among these projects, MARBEL project played a significant role in presenting its innovative contributions to the field.

The event opened with an introduction to the COLLABAT Cluster initiative, followed by short presentations from MARBEL, HELIOS, LIBERTY, ALBATROSS, and iBATTMAN. From the MARBEL project, Eduard Piqueras project coordinator from Eurecat Technology Center, presented MARBEL’s efforts to develop cutting-edge solutions for EV batteries. The session explored diverse approaches to modular and cell-to-pack battery designs.

One of the highlights of the event was the session on battery design systems, moderated by Sanjith Anuratha, researcher at Eurecat. Violeta Vargas, researcher from Eurecat, presented MARBEL project’s innovative work on circular design for high-performance battery packs, emphasizing sustainability without compromising efficiency. Other presentations covered hybrid modular designs to accommodate diverse driving styles, lightweight cell-to-pack configurations for improved safety and efficiency, and scalable modular designs to meet evolving industry needs.

Further discussions emphasized advancements in high-performance battery systems. Alberto Gómez from FICOSA Group presented MARBEL’s development of a switchable 400V/800V junction box, a key innovation enabling ultra-fast charging. Other projects demonstrated progress in areas such as thermal management, sensor-based energy optimization, and the use of digital twin technology.

The workshop also included a session dedicated to Battery Management Systems (BMS), which play a critical role in ensuring battery reliability and efficiency. Sergi Obrador-Rey from IREC delivered a presentation on MARBEL’s work in this area, including real-time monitoring, novel algorithms, and sustainability-driven system designs. Other presentations explored advancements in wireless and cloud-connected BMS technologies, emphasizing the importance of data analytics and secure connections in future EV applications.

Beyond the presentations, the event featured an exhibition displaying various components and battery modules and components developed by the participating projects, accompanied by posters and promotional materials. MARBEL exhibited one of its battery modules designed for environmentally friendly and lightweight mobility, offering participants a closer look at the practical applications and potential of the showcased technologies.

The COLLABAT Cluster workshop provided a platform for knowledge sharing and networking among collective efforts of European research initiatives in driving the evolution of electric mobility. Through projects like MARBEL, the industry is taking significant steps toward making electric vehicles more efficient, reliable, and accessible to a broader market.
