D8.3 Life Cycle Assessment of proposed solutions and circular economy strategies planned - Abstract

This report presents the results of the LCA of MARBEL’s developments. LCA has enabled a comprehensive evaluation of MARBEL’s environmental performance. Moreover, by applying LCA as a decision-making tool, MARBEL has optimized its design to reduce environmental burdens while enhancing circularity and resource efficiency. Key performance indicators included reducing Global Warming Potential (GWP) by 32%, and in general minimizing all environmental impact categories by 36% in average.

Through strategic material selection, lightweighting, design for disassembly, and second-life applications, MARBEL demonstrates substantial impact reductions compared to the baseline, reinforcing the value of LCA-driven ecodesign. The adoption of design for disassembly, extended battery lifespan strategies, and second-life integration further strengthens MARBEL’s role as a sustainable and circular battery solution.

The results highlight the effectiveness of integrating LCA and ecodesign principles in advanced battery development, paving the way for more sustainable energy storage systems. By addressing key environmental challenges and promoting circularity, MARBEL contributes to the broader goals of resource efficiency, emissions reduction, and long-term sustainability in the battery industry.
