D4.3 Smart Cell Manager - Abstract
The excess of wiring complexity in battery packs due to the large number of sensors increases the manufacturing costs over-proportionally given the relatively small cost of the data acquisition system. In addition, the quantity of sensors is increasing, basically to get better performance and safety that their use in the battery provides. Battery packs include special systems to damp oscillations and absorb vibrations useful to provide a high reliability for components such as the physical connections among sensors, transmitters and receivers, however, those systems impact on the final production cost. Similarly, wired communications add a level of manufacturing complexity that prevents the automation of the production process. In this sense, the battery assembling is done manually in part, thus, leading to a more expensive product.
The approach of the Smart Cell Manager, consists on the implementation of a system which incorporate a real low power wireless communication technology which allows each and every iSCM to communicate the cell data to the battery master controller (usually the BMS).
